A Ugandan couple, Mr. and Mrs. Odong, recently shared their perspective on embracing their son, Andrew, as a gay man.
Andrew, who is married to Tosin Ojutalayo, a Nigerian gay man, gained attention last year when they celebrated their dream wedding in France in May 2023, attended by Andrew’s parents.
In a heartfelt podcast featuring Andrew, his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Odongs reflected on their unwavering support for Andrew, emphasizing that they could not reject him based on his sexual orientation.
Andrew’s father expressed his understanding that being gay is an inherent aspect of Andrew’s identity, one that cannot be altered.
In his words: “It is what you are. You are not going to change for somebody, even for your parents. If that is what you are,”
Similarly, Andrew’s mother affirmed her acceptance of her son’s sexuality, rejecting any notion that being gay equates to illness or mortality. She emphasized that love knows no bounds and that she could never disown her child because of who they love.
“Tosin and Andrew, as I know them, are my children. They will always be my children for the rest of my life,” she declared, while stating her enduring love and support for her son and his partner.
