The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly opposed the recent surge in electricity tariffs across the nation.
In a press release issued by NANS’ Public Relations Officer, Mimidoo Joy, the association voiced its condemnation of the hike, deeming it unjust and unreasonable.
NANS called upon the government to prioritize effective metering for all consumers, thereby eliminating estimated billing and ensuring fair charges.
While recognizing the critical role electricity plays in the lives of all Nigerians, NANS criticized the attempt by Distribution Companies (DisCos) to shift the burden of inefficiencies within the power sector onto citizens through tariff increments.
The student body highlighted the challenges faced by the power sector, including maintenance costs and overloaded electrical lines leading to frequent breakdowns.
Moreover, NANS expressed disappointment in the privatization of the power sector, citing a failure to achieve desired improvements in generation, transmission, and distribution. The association attributed this shortfall to supervisory flaws and compromised processes.
