The issue of coup in West Africa has become very noticeable to the point where the Federal Government of Nigeria has recently dismissed the thought of possible coup occurrence in Nigeria. The FG mentioned that the Nigerian Government has gone past a forceful takeover.
The FG also connoted that Nigerians have fully embraced democracy and that the country’s democratic system is becoming stronger. It mentioned that the fact that neighbouring countries including Niger Republic has witnesses a coup recently does not mean that Nigeria should be in any form of apprehension or fear.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said this in an interview. In his terms he said:
“I can tell you that there is no fear or apprehension at all. We have gone past that, and we have been a democratic country all this while with the institutions of democracy getting stronger.”
Whereas some retired generals in separate interviews have warned that the only way for a coup not to occur in the continent is for the leaders to abide by the laws of the Constitution and ensure good governance in their respective countries.
