The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has issued an apology to Nigerians for his recent remarks suggesting that people keep freezers on for days due to low electricity tariffs.
Speaking on Channels TV, the Minister expressed regret, stating, “Anything we have said that is considered offensive, we are sorry about that.” Adelabu faced backlash for his comments, which were perceived as insensitive.
He clarified that his intention was to offer advice on energy consumption management, aimed at reducing energy bills, especially for those affected by the recent tariff increase.
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) raised the electricity tariff for customers enjoying 20 hours of power supply daily, affecting approximately 1.5 million consumers.
Despite the apology, criticism persists over the immediate impact of the tariff hike, considering the current economic challenges facing Nigerians.
