Following similar actions by Nathaniel Bassey, gospel singer Mercy Chinwo and her husband, Blessed Uzochikwa, have initiated legal proceedings against five social media users for criminal defamation.
The lawsuit stems from allegations made by the defendants – Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, DJ Spoiltkid, Terrence Ekot, and Samuel Agozie – claiming that Bassey fathered Mercy’s six-month-old son.
These claims surfaced on social media after the couple unveiled their son’s identity on March 29.
According to the report the lawsuit was filed by the couple’s lawyers, led by Pelumi Olajengbesi of Law Corridor, an Abuja-based law firm. Consequently, the Chief Magistrate Court, Wuse Zone 2, has summoned the defendants for defamation, as per a court summons dated April 3.
Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna has directed the defendants to appear before the court on April 23 to address the charges brought against them by Mercy and her husband. The complaints allege that the defendants’ actions constitute cyber intimidation, injurious falsehood, and cyberstalking, violating Sections 391 of the Penal Code and Section 24 (1)(B) of the Cybercrimes Act 2015.
In response, two of the defendants, Okoronkwo Ejike and DJ SpoiltKid, have publicly apologized on their social media platforms. Ejike expressed regret for any harm caused by his post, while DJ SpoiltKid clarified that his retweet was meant for information sharing, not endorsement of the allegations. He emphasized his dedication to providing news from various sources and apologized for any misunderstanding.
