For six days now, hundreds of women and children from Okuama community, Ewu Kingdom, in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, have been stranded in the forests, facing hunger and uncertainty.
They fled their homes in fear for their lives when Nigerian Army troops invaded the community following the killing of 17 soldiers last Friday.
In response to the situation, Delta State governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged traditional rulers in the state not to shield suspects linked to the killing of soldiers in Okuama community.
The governors of all 36 states of the federation have also condemned the attack on the military personnel and reiterated their call for the establishment of state police.
Expressing concern over the incident, former Minister of Communications, Maj. Gen. Tajudeen Olanrewaju (retd), warned that the killing of soldiers could escalate into larger conflicts if not addressed promptly.
He highlighted the potential for community warfare to escalate and emphasized the need for swift action to prevent further violence.
Former Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mike Ejiofor, emphasized the importance of an independent investigation into the killings. He suggested that such a probe could potentially implicate influential individuals and VIPs, underscoring the gravity of the situation and the need for thorough scrutiny.
