The disease gastroenteritis has hit the mega city, Lagos State in Nigeria as 117 cases have been reported. The Lagos state government has set up emergency operation centers to help tackle the outbreak.
Gastroenteritis is basically a Viral infection causing vomiting and diarrhea. It can be caused by the virus Rotavirus and Norovirus.
Gastroenteritis can be caused by the following
^ close contact with an infected person
^ Contaminated food or water
^Not washing the hands after visiting the toilet or handling baby’s used diaper.
^ Caused by a Virus or sometimes Bacteria.
Symptoms include—watery diarrhea and vomiting which most likely leads to dehydration which can be very dangerous. Other signs include stomach cramping or pain . Fever, nausea and Headaches
Signs of dehydration include a dry skin and dry mouth.
Infants and Children should also be properly observed at this time for any signs of stooling and vomiting. Keep all Children away from day care or school until symptoms are gone.
Vaccines for Rotavirus are available for Infants to help curb this disease.
To protect one’s self from this disease Proper Hand Washing is very essential.
All care givers looking after infants and children should ensure they wash their hands frequently.
