On Sunday, Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, held his first emirate council meeting with district heads and senior traditional council members at the Gidan Rumfa palace.
This significant event marked his return to the emirate’s leadership following his reinstatement by Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Friday.
The former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) assumed his superior role by leading the maiden expanded council meeting. With over 40 district heads and key senior council members present, the meeting symbolized the end of the recent tensions surrounding the emirship in Kano State.
The district heads and council members demonstrated their allegiance by prostrating before Emir Sanusi, formally endorsing him as the rightful Emir of Kano.
Among those who paid homage were the five kingmakers: Madaki, Wali, Makama, Sarkin Bai, and Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta.
Other notable figures included Waziri, Turaki, Sarkin Shanu, Danburan, Dan İsa, Dan Lawan, Dan Amar Magajin Gari, Dan Majen, Dan Kade, Matawalle, Sarkin Fulanin Jaidanawa, Magajin Malam, Dokaji, and Dandarman Kano.
Additionally, Marafa, Dallatu, Magajin Rafi, Sarkin Fada, Bunun, Baura, Dan Madamin, Dan Galadima, Talba, San Turaki, Dangoriba, Dan Maliki, Falaki, Yarima, Baraya, Zanna, Yan Daka, Fagaci, Dan Masani, and Wakilin Barden Kano were in attendance.
Emir Sanusi also met with various interest groups, including vigilante organizations, women’s groups, private individuals, and well-wishers, who gathered at the palace to express their respect and loyalty.
His arrival at the council meeting was greeted with admiration and jubilation as he emerged in grand style on a white royal horse from his inner palace at Gidan Rumfa, acknowledging the warm greetings from his subjects.
Emir Sanusi’s reinstatement was finalized on Thursday following Governor Yusuf’s assent to a new law that repealed the 2019 legislation. The previous law had divided the Kano emirate into five distinct regions and was the basis for Sanusi’s removal as Emir of Kano.
