Yesterday, the Economic Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC probed Dr. Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation over the payment of N585 million to a private account.
The Vice President, Atiku Abubakar told the federal government that suspending the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation was not enough, he mentioned that the federal government is increasing the poverty rate in the nation if major steps are not taken against Dr. Betta Edu and others involved in financial crimes in the ministry.
Over the issue of financial scandal, Dr. Betta was suspended by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu while the EFCC investigated the huge sum of money that was sent to a private account under her guidance as the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.
According to information gathered from Vanguard, Dr. Betta was suspended by the President and an EFCC source revealed that she arrived at the EFCC office at 11 am and was expected to be released at 11 pm.
Other multiple financial scandals had occurred in the ministry which involved Halima Shehu and Sadiya Umar-Farouq but while questioning Dr. Betta over the N585 million that was moved from the ministry to a probate account, she said no financial rules were breached in moving the cash away from the treasury into a separate account to be managed by an appointed account officer but the Accountant General of the Federation disagreed, which prompted the Presidency to suspend her on Monday and ordered a probe.
While Sadiya Umar-Farouq is reported to have been associated with the payment of over N37 billion into some questionable entities and contractors, Halima Shehu is said to have moved various amounts of money belonging to the NSIP under the humanitarian ministry into several private bank accounts.
