Two teenagers, suspected to be siblings, tragically lost their lives on the Imowo-Ibadan Road in the Ijebu Ode Local Government Area of Ogun State. The incident occurred at around 8 a.m. on Monday when a speeding Honda car struck the pedestrians, leading to their untimely deaths.

Bolaji Akinbiyi, the spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency, revealed the details to PUNCH Metro. The driver, operating at excessive speed, lost control of the vehicle, colliding with the teenagers who were walking by the roadside. The impact resulted in the immediate demise of the siblings.

Witnesses reported that, upon realizing the severity of the situation and witnessing the lifeless bodies of the young victims, some local youths attempted to attack the driver and set the vehicle ablaze. The prompt intervention of TRACE officials, the Army, the police, and other emergency responders prevented further escalation.

Akinbiyi stated, “The accident vehicle has been towed to Obalende Police Station, Ijebu-Ide, for further investigation. At the same time, the bodies of the two siblings (male and female) have been deposited at the Ijebu-Ode General Hospital mortuary.”

While expressing condolences to the bereaved family, the TRACE spokesperson emphasized the need for drivers to avoid excessive speed on expressways, highlighting the associated risks. Pedestrians were also urged to exercise caution and face oncoming traffic to enhance safety while using the road.

This unfortunate incident follows a similar occurrence on March 2, where a mob reportedly set ablaze a Toyota Hilux vehicle after it allegedly killed three people around the Kara-OPIC bus stop on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. The Ogun State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps reported that the vehicle suffered brake failure, resulting in the tragic incident. The injured victims were taken to the Lagos Emergency Centre for medical treatment.
