Musa Mukanga, a Kenyan man, has reportedly been sentenced to life imprisonment simply for accepting a second-hand phone from a friend.
The ordeal unfolded on September 2nd, 2013, when Musa’s friend entrusted him with the mobile device. Little did Musa know that this seemingly innocent gesture would lead to such severe consequences.
Trusting his friend’s intentions, he inserted his SIM card and entered his PIN, only for the phone to abruptly shut down due to low battery.
Seeking a solution, Musa took the phone to his sister’s hotel to charge it, retrieving it the next morning before heading to work.
However, upon attempting to unlock the device, he realized he lacked the necessary password, rendering it inaccessible. Desperate to resolve the issue, Musa entrusted the phone to his sister, instructing her to return it to his friend, Ng’ang’a, upon his arrival.
Unbeknownst to him, this decision would prove disastrous. Tragically, a week later, law enforcement officers confronted Musa, promptly arresting him and demanding an explanation for the phone in his possession.
Confused and unaware of the severity of the situation, Musa innocently shared the circumstances surrounding the phone, unknowingly implicating himself and his friend.
Consequently, both Musa and Ng’ang’a were taken into custody. Heartbreakingly, Ng’ang’a confessed during interrogation to providing Musa with the controversial phone.
Despite Musa’s pleas of innocence and his complete lack of knowledge about the phone’s origins, the justice system remained unwavering, sentencing him to death, later commuted to a life sentence.
