The Enugu State Police Command has apprehended Mfonobong Udoudom, a lecturer at the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), for allegedly engaging in sexual assault against a married female student in his office.
Udoudom, who teaches at the School of General Studies, was taken into custody on Monday and remains detained.
Reports suggest that the lecturer coerced the female student into a sexual relationship, threatening academic consequences if she did not comply with his demands.
After the students completed their examinations for his course, he warned some female students of potential failure unless they attend to his request.
The affected student reported the incident to her husband, who lodged a complaint with university authorities.
Subsequently, the university initiated an investigation and advised the student to cooperate, which has led to the arrest of the lecturer.
A viral video circulating on social media captured the lecturer naked in his office, a scene that has shocked many.
Numerous individuals, claiming to have been taught by the lecturer, expressed disappointment at his alleged actions.
The university responded swiftly, announcing the indefinite suspension of the lecturer pending a thorough investigation by a disciplinary panel.
In a statement, UNN reiterated its zero-tolerance policy towards sexual misconduct and pledged to take appropriate disciplinary action if the lecturer is found guilty.
The statement reads:
“The Ministry of Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development is aware of the matter and is keenly following developments.
“We are aware that the lecturer in question has been suspended indefinitely by the school authorities and an investigative panel has been set up to look into the matter.
“We are very much interested in getting to the root of the matter and there will be no sweeping of anything under the carpet. We are determined to ensure that justice prevails for all.
“Be it known that under the watch of His Excellency, Peter Mbah, Enugu State has zero tolerance for any form of gender-based violence, harassment or exploitation.”
