The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) has raised concerns about the widespread “hatred” directed towards officers of the Nigeria Police Force, warning of its adverse effects on national security.
During the 40th anniversary celebration of the Committee in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Mogaji Olaniyan, the National Chairman of PCRC, stressed the urgent need to address the strained relationship between communities and the police to effectively tackle insecurity.
Olaniyan called for a shift in perspective, advocating for increased appreciation and respect towards the Nigeria Police. He emphasized that fostering a positive and enduring bond between the police and the community is crucial in dispelling negative perceptions.
Highlighting the societal influence on perpetuating animosity towards law enforcement, Olaniyan pointed out instances where parents use the threat of police intervention as a disciplinary measure for their children.
He stressed the importance of breaking this cycle of hostility from an early age to cultivate mutual respect and cooperation between citizens and law enforcement.
“We are urging people to show love to the Nigeria Police, as this is what they lack. From childhood, we have instilled enmity between our children and the Nigeria Police,” Olaniyan stated.
