Renowned gospel artist Nathaniel Bassey has taken a bold step in defense of his reputation, petitioning the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to investigate and prosecute four individuals for spreading false accusations against him.
The petition, submitted by Bassey’s legal team on April 1, 2024, highlights the serious nature of criminal defamation and cyberstalking allegedly perpetrated by Okoronkwo Ejike, Kingsley Ibeh, Terrence Ekot, and Dj Spoiltkid.
The controversy arose when four social media users propagated baseless claims suggesting that Bassey was the father of Mercy Chinwo’s child, a fellow gospel singer.
In OKoronkwo Ejike’s words:
“This is the true face of Mercy Chinwo’s child she was hiding after giving birth but the truth is that this little baby look exactly like singer Nathaniel Bassey. Nothing anybody wan reason me oh, this child is Nathaniel Bassey’s Baby, just maybe there was a secret away match that occurred otherwise how can we make empirical sense of this
These unfounded allegations quickly gained traction, causing significant harm to Bassey’s personal and professional reputation.
His legal representatives underscored the damaging impact of such falsehoods, emphasizing the broader repercussions on both individual and societal levels.
Bassey, known for his impactful music ministry, found himself unjustly targeted by malicious rumors that tarnished his image. The petition details how the accused individuals exploited social media platforms to propagate defamatory content, recklessly disregarding the consequences of their actions.
Their conduct, deemed as character assassination, is in violation of relevant sections of the Criminal Code Act and the Cybercrimes Act.
In urging the Inspector-General of Police to intervene, Bassey’s legal team emphasizes the need for justice to prevail.
They highlight the far-reaching implications of online defamation, which can destabilize marriages, inflict lasting damage on reputations, and undermine international standing.
