The Presidential Air Fleet (PAF) is set to undergo a significant downsizing, with plans to sell off three jets aimed at curbing government expenditure.
Currently comprising six jets and four helicopters, the fleet will be reduced to seven aircraft if the proposed action is implemented, as reported by The Nation.
This move is part of the cost-saving strategies adopted by President Bola Tinubu’s administration, in response to the substantial maintenance costs incurred by the PAF.
Over the years, the maintenance budget for the PAF has escalated, with not less than N80 billion allocated for maintenance costs from 2016 to 2023.
Despite the significant financial allocations, the rising expenses prompted discomfort within the presidency, leading to the decision to streamline the fleet.
President Tinubu expressed concerns about the frequency and expenses associated with maintenance, prompting the directive to reduce the number of aircraft in the fleet.
Citing insider information, it was revealed that the President identified three planes for disposal, prioritizing those with the highest maintenance costs.
This decision echoes similar attempts made during the tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who also considered selling off aircraft from the fleet.
In 2016, two aircraft were put up for sale, but the preferred bidders’ reduced offer was rejected by the government.
To explore alternative revenue streams and alleviate maintenance costs, the government explored options such as leasing some of the aircraft to willing governors.
This initiative aimed to generate income while reducing the financial burden on the government.
