Nigeria was enveloped in darkness on Thursday afternoon as the national power grid suffered a collapse just before the Easter holidays.

The central management hub in Osogbo, Osun State, experienced a significant breakdown at 4:30 pm, resulting in a widespread power outage affecting millions of households and businesses.

Reports from various distribution companies (DisCos) indicated inactive feeders, contributing to the blackout across the nation.

According to data from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), the grid collapsed around 4 pm, causing the power capacity to plummet from 2,984 megawatts (MW) to zero within an hour.

By 5 pm, all 21 connected power plants had ceased operations. The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) released a statement attributing the outage to a system failure in the national grid.

“The system collapsed at about 16:28 hours today 28 March 2024, causing the outage currently being experienced across our franchise area.

We appeal for your understanding as all stakeholders are working hard to restore normal supply.” AEDC stated.
