Oriola Michael Aregbesola, an Aviation Machinist’s Mate 2nd Class, has tragically passed away.
Aregbesola gained attention in 2020 when he left Nigeria to join the U.S. Navy, citing the force’s recognition of his potential and his subsequent enlistment as a sailor. According to a statement released by the U.S. Navy on Saturday, Aregbesola was lost overboard from USS Mason (DDG 87) while the ship was operating in the Red Sea on March 20.
The statement from the U.S. Navy expressed deep condolences and highlighted Aregbesola’s exceptional performance both before and during deployment. Aregbesola, assigned to the “Swamp Foxes” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 74, was described as a valued member of the ship/air team, whose dedication and service will be remembered by all who served alongside him.
The USS Mason and HSM-74 are part of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group, currently deployed in the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations.
The Commanding officer of HSM-74, Eric Kohut, expressed profound sorrow over Aregbesola’s passing, emphasizing his selfless character and dedication as a United States Navy Sailor.
Aregbesola joined the Navy in July 2020 and reported to HSM-74 in December 2020, where he quickly became an integral part of the team, embodying the core values of the Navy with his warrior spirit and commitment to duty.
