Nigerian artist, Ayra Starr, revealed in a recent interview with Billboard News that she gained admission to university at the age of 14.
She shared that her mother, who had been supportive of her music aspirations, encouraged her to pursue her education before focusing on her music career.
According to Ayra Starr, her mother insisted that she complete her studies before venturing into music. Initially hesitant, she eventually agreed and relocated to Lagos from Benin Republic, believing it to be a fertile ground for music opportunities.
Starr acknowledged that she wanted to become a teenage pop star and realized that waiting until the typical age of 15 or 16 to complete secondary school would hinder that goal. Therefore, she took the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam early to hasten her graduation process.
Although her exam results were not exceptional, they were sufficient for her mother’s requirements. She was admitted to a reputable university to study International Relations, a course that lasted three years. Immediately after graduating, she began posting music covers online and eventually signed with Mavin Records label the same year.
