Uzbekistan has introduced temporary restrictions on visa issuance and entry for Nigerian citizens, raising concerns among Nigerians planning to visit the Central Asian country for business, education, tourism and other purposes.

The development came to light through a notice published on the website of the Green Energy Technologies Central Asia (GETCA) exhibition, which provides information for international visitors.

According to the notice, Nigerian passport holders are currently affected by restrictions on obtaining visas and entering Uzbekistan.

The announcement has created uncertainty for prospective travellers, particularly those who already have travel plans or intend to attend business and trade events in the country.

However, the notice indicates that entry may still be considered under exceptional circumstances, with affected individuals advised to contact the consular section of the Embassy of Uzbekistan for further guidance.

Here are five important things Nigerians need to know about the reported restrictions.

1. Uzbekistan introduces temporary visa restrictions for Nigerians

The notice published on the GETCA exhibition website states that temporary restrictions have been introduced on visa issuance and entry into Uzbekistan for Nigerian citizens.

It reads:

“Temporary restrictions have currently been introduced on the issuance of visas and entry into the Republic of Uzbekistan for citizens of your country.”

The announcement means Nigerian passport holders may face difficulties obtaining visas and securing permission to enter the country under the usual arrangements.

The information was published on GETCA’s official visitor information page, where the restriction is listed under Nigeria.

However, the notice does not describe the measure as a permanent ban. It specifically refers to temporary restrictions, leaving the duration and possible conditions for their removal unclear.

2. Nigeria is not the only country affected

The restrictions listed on the exhibition website are not limited to Nigerian citizens.

Similar notices also appear for nationals of Ghana, Kenya, Egypt, Iraq and Bangladesh.

This indicates that the measures affect several nationalities rather than Nigerians alone.

However, the exhibition website does not provide a detailed explanation of why these countries were included or whether the same administrative considerations apply to every nationality.

The development could affect travellers from the listed countries who intend to visit Uzbekistan for tourism, commercial activities, academic programmes and international exhibitions.

For Nigerians, the announcement is particularly important because it could disrupt travel plans involving business meetings, trade opportunities and educational engagements.

3. Exceptional entry may still be possible through the Uzbek embassy

Despite the restrictions, the notice provides a possible route for individuals who have exceptional reasons to travel to Uzbekistan.

According to the published information, Nigerians requiring entry under exceptional circumstances should contact the consular section of the Embassy of Uzbekistan.

This means prospective travellers should not automatically assume that every possible entry request will be rejected.

However, the notice does not explain what qualifies as an exceptional circumstance or whether special consideration is available for business emergencies, official assignments, educational commitments or other urgent reasons.

Travellers will therefore need to obtain clarification directly from the diplomatic mission before making arrangements.

The embassy’s guidance will be particularly important for people who have already received invitations to conferences, exhibitions, business meetings or academic programmes in Uzbekistan.

Those with urgent travel requirements should prepare supporting documents explaining the purpose of their visit and request clarification on whether their applications can be considered.

4. Uzbekistan has not publicly explained the reason for the restrictions

One of the major unanswered questions surrounding the development is why Uzbekistan introduced the temporary restrictions.

As of November 6, 2026, no detailed public explanation from Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs had been identified specifically addressing the measures affecting Nigerian passport holders.

The general visa information provided through the ministry’s online channels continues to outline the country’s usual entry arrangements but does not clearly explain the reported restrictions.

The GETCA notice also does not state whether the decision is connected to diplomatic issues, immigration concerns, security considerations or administrative changes.

It would therefore be premature to attribute the restrictions to any particular political or diplomatic dispute.

The absence of a public explanation has left prospective travellers uncertain about the circumstances surrounding the decision.

There is also no clearly stated date for when the restrictions will be reviewed or lifted.

5. Nigerians planning to travel are advised to contact the embassy

The restrictions could affect Nigerians intending to visit Uzbekistan for several reasons.

These include tourism, business meetings, international exhibitions, educational programmes, professional engagements and other personal or official activities.

People who have already started visa applications may also need to confirm whether their applications can proceed under the current arrangements.

Prospective travellers are advised to contact the Uzbek embassy’s consular section before paying for flights, accommodation or other non-refundable travel arrangements.

They should also seek written clarification about their eligibility, particularly if they believe their circumstances qualify for exceptional consideration.

For additional reporting on the development, see The Sun Nigeria’s report on Uzbekistan’s visa restrictions.

Travellers should also monitor updates from Uzbekistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and its diplomatic representatives for any changes to the restrictions.

What does the development mean for Nigerian passport holders?

The reported restrictions represent a significant uncertainty for Nigerians who intend to travel to Uzbekistan.

Although the notice describes the measures as temporary, it does not provide a clear timeline for their removal or explain the precise scope of the restrictions.

Nigerians should therefore avoid assuming that the country’s usual visa application arrangements remain available to them without additional checks.

Those with urgent reasons to travel may still seek guidance through the consular section of the Uzbek embassy to determine whether exceptional entry arrangements apply to their circumstances.

Until the Uzbek authorities provide further clarification, prospective travellers are advised to verify their eligibility before making financial commitments.

The situation may change if the government issues a formal statement or updates its visa arrangements.
