Pope Leo XIV has been diagnosed with lung cancer after undergoing surgery to remove the lower lobe of his right lung at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, according to a medical bulletin released by the Vatican.

The 71-year-old pontiff was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma, a form of lung cancer, after tests conducted during the operation confirmed suspicions raised by earlier medical examinations.

The Vatican said the surgery was successful and that no complications occurred during the procedure. The Pope reportedly regained consciousness normally after the operation and was returned to his room on the hospital’s 10th floor to continue his recovery.

The development marks a significant health concern for the head of the Catholic Church, although the Vatican has not provided a detailed prognosis or confirmed what additional treatment, if any, may be required.

According to the medical bulletin, doctors had suspected the presence of cancer before the operation. An examination of the affected tissue during surgery subsequently confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma.

The Vatican explained that surgeons removed the lower lobe of the Pope’s right lung using a video-assisted surgical technique.

The procedure was intended to remove the affected tissue. However, the full extent of the disease and the long-term outlook have not been publicly established in the available medical update.

Lung adenocarcinoma is a common form of lung cancer that develops in cells involved in producing substances such as mucus. Its progression and treatment options can vary depending on factors including the size and location of the tumour and whether cancer cells have spread beyond the original site.

The Vatican’s announcement did not provide all the clinical details needed to determine the Pope’s prognosis.

Surgery Lasted About 90 Minutes

The Vatican reported that the Pope was in the operating room for approximately three hours, while the surgical procedure itself lasted around 90 minutes.

Doctors described the operation as successful, with no complications reported.

Following the procedure, Pope Leo regained consciousness normally and was transferred to his hospital room for postoperative care.

The operation was led by Professor Stefano Margaritora, Gemelli Hospital’s chief thoracic surgeon, alongside a medical team.

Gemelli Hospital in Rome is known for treating senior Catholic Church figures, including previous popes. The facility has specialised medical teams and experience in managing complex health conditions.

The latest update provided reassurance about the immediate outcome of the operation, although further information will be needed to establish the pontiff’s recovery progress and any subsequent treatment requirements.

Pope Leo Waves to Well-Wishers Before Surgery

Earlier on Tuesday, Pope Leo arrived at Gemelli Hospital through the main entrance ahead of the planned procedure.

He reportedly waved to dozens of well-wishers who had gathered outside the hospital to see him.

The appearance came after the Pope disclosed that doctors had discovered a small, localised nodule in his lung during recent medical examinations.

He had previously explained that his doctors recommended surgery to remove the growth and that he had decided to follow their advice.

The Vatican subsequently announced that he would undergo the procedure at the Rome hospital.

News of the diagnosis is likely to concern Catholics and other followers around the world, many of whom have expressed support for the pontiff during his hospitalisation.

Vatican Yet to Provide Full Recovery Outlook

Although the Vatican confirmed the diagnosis and successful surgery, important medical questions remain unanswered.

The public statement did not provide a detailed account of the cancer’s stage, whether any cancer cells were found beyond the removed lung tissue, or whether additional treatment would be recommended.

Doctors typically consider several factors when assessing lung cancer after surgery, including laboratory findings, imaging results and evidence of any spread to other parts of the body.

The removal of affected lung tissue can be an important treatment for some patients, but surgery alone does not establish the long-term outcome in every case.

Any assessment of Pope Leo’s recovery will therefore depend on further medical information and the advice of his treating team.

Pope’s Public Engagements Affected by Hospitalisation

The pontiff’s hospitalisation has also affected his public schedule. Reports indicate that his scheduled audiences and public engagements have been cancelled through October 20 to allow time for recovery.

The Vatican has not provided a definitive long-term update on how the diagnosis may affect his future activities.

Attention will also be focused on his planned November visit to South America, which includes stops in Uruguay, Argentina and Peru. The extent to which his recovery may affect that trip remains uncertain.

For now, the immediate priority is the Pope’s postoperative recovery and any further assessments considered necessary by his doctors.

Catholics Await Further Updates on Pope Leo’s Health

Pope Leo XIV’s diagnosis represents a major health development for the 71-year-old leader of the Catholic Church.

The Vatican has confirmed that the cancer was identified during surgery and that doctors successfully removed the lower lobe of his right lung without reported complications.

However, the precise stage of the cancer, the need for further treatment and the longer-term prognosis have not been fully disclosed.

As the pontiff recovers at Gemelli Hospital, Catholics and supporters worldwide will be watching for additional updates from the Vatican and his medical team.

For now, the official information confirms the diagnosis and successful operation, while further details about his recovery remain pending.
