Former gang leader Duane “Keffe D” Davis has been sentenced to 40 years to life in prison for orchestrating the 1996 drive-by shooting that killed legendary American rapper Tupac Shakur in Las Vegas.

Davis, 63, received the sentence on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, after a jury found him guilty of first-degree murder in August. The sentencing marks a major development in one of hip-hop’s most notorious murder cases, which remained unsolved for nearly three decades.

The former leader of the South Side Compton Crips gang appeared before a Las Vegas court, where Judge Carli Kierny handed down the sentence following emotional statements from members of Shakur’s family.

According to reports, Davis received consecutive sentences of 20 years to life for murder and an additional 20 years to life for the use of a deadly weapon, resulting in a total sentence of 40 years to life. He has indicated that he intends to appeal his conviction.

Judge Addresses Davis During Sentencing

During the hearing, Judge Kierny addressed the impact of Shakur’s death on his family and the wider community.

“You don’t get to take a man from his family,” the judge said, emphasising the consequences of taking the rapper’s life and depriving him of his future.

She further stated that Davis could not simply walk away from the killing, particularly given Shakur’s lasting influence and the decades of grief experienced by those closest to him.

Shakur was 25 years old when he was fatally shot in September 1996. Nearly 30 years later, his music continues to attract millions of listeners, while his death remains one of the most discussed cases in the history of American hip-hop.

Prosecutors Demand Maximum Sentence

Prosecutors had urged the court to impose the maximum available punishment, arguing that Davis deserved a lengthy prison term because of his role in planning the attack.

Marc DiGiacomo, one of the prosecutors involved in the case, argued that Davis should not receive a more lenient sentence.

The prosecution relied heavily on statements Davis had made over the years, including interviews and a 2019 memoir in which he discussed his involvement in the events surrounding Shakur’s killing.

Authorities alleged that Davis helped organise the shooting and supplied a firearm to associates who carried out the attack.

Davis’ defence attorney, Michael Sanft, had asked for a sentence of 40 years in prison and confirmed that the defence intended to appeal the conviction.

The defence had previously challenged the prosecution’s case, arguing that the evidence against Davis was insufficient. The jury nevertheless found him guilty in August.

Tupac’s Sister Delivers Emotional Statement

One of the most emotional moments of the sentencing hearing came when Shakur’s sister, Sekyiwa Shakur, addressed the court about the devastating impact of her brother’s death.

She described how losing Tupac had affected her family emotionally and mentally for years.

“The loss of Tupac for a long time crippled my entire family emotionally, mentally,” Sekyiwa said.

She also disclosed that she had been hospitalised multiple times while dealing with depression, suicidal thoughts and trauma following the loss.

In a deeply personal tribute, she recalled the everyday details that made her brother special to her, including his appearance, his laugh and his cooking.

“I miss my brother. I do. I miss his skin. I miss his scars on his head. He had a strawberry on his chest. I miss the way he ate. Miss his recipe for chicken. I miss his laugh,” she said.

Her statement highlighted the lasting personal consequences of the killing beyond the headlines, court proceedings and years of public speculation surrounding the case.

Shakur’s brother, Maurice, also delivered a statement before Judge Kierny announced the sentence.

How Tupac Shakur Was Killed

Tupac Shakur was shot on September 7, 1996, while travelling in a BMW driven by Death Row Records co-founder Marion “Suge” Knight in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The shooting occurred after a Mike Tyson boxing match and followed an earlier confrontation involving members of rival groups.

A white Cadillac pulled alongside the BMW near the Las Vegas Strip, and gunmen opened fire. Shakur sustained multiple gunshot wounds and died in hospital six days later, on September 13, 1996.

He was 25.

The killing triggered years of investigations, speculation and conspiracy theories. Despite Shakur’s enormous fame, investigators struggled for decades to secure a prosecution.

The case eventually moved forward after Davis made public statements about his involvement and discussed the shooting in interviews and his memoir.

Prosecutors argued that he helped arrange the attack as retaliation for an earlier altercation involving his nephew, Orlando Anderson, and members of Shakur’s entourage.

Davis was accused of providing the gun used in the shooting, although authorities did not identify him as the person who fired the fatal shots.

Who Was Tupac Shakur?

Tupac Shakur, also known as 2Pac, was one of the most influential figures in hip-hop history.

He rose to prominence during the 1990s with songs that explored poverty, racial inequality, violence, relationships and life in disadvantaged communities.

His music included celebrated tracks such as “California Love,” “Dear Mama” and “Changes.” In addition to his career as a rapper, he appeared in several films and developed a reputation as a powerful and outspoken cultural figure.

His death at the age of 25 cut short a career that was still developing. His influence, however, continued long after his passing, with his recordings and legacy remaining central to conversations about hip-hop.

The sentencing of Davis represents a significant legal development in the case, although the former gang leader has said he intends to challenge his conviction on appeal.

For Shakur’s family, the court proceedings have provided an opportunity to speak publicly about the loss they have endured for almost three decades.
