Jehovah’s Witnesses have announced a major adjustment to their long-standing position on blood transfusions, giving individual members the freedom to decide whether to accept or donate four main blood components based on personal conscience.

The Governing Body of Jehovah’s Witnesses announced the change on September 18, 2026, through a statement issued from the organisation’s World Headquarters in Warwick, New York.

Under the updated position, members can personally decide whether to accept blood components including red blood cells, white blood cells, plasma and platelets from another person. They can also decide whether to donate blood specifically for the purpose of providing components or fractions for another person.

The organisation said the decision is now a matter of individual conscience.

“The decision to accept red cells, white cells, plasma or platelets from another person’s blood is a matter of personal conscience,” the Governing Body stated.

Despite the announcement, Jehovah’s Witnesses stressed that the new policy does not mean the organisation has abandoned its position against whole-blood transfusions.

The religious group said its long-standing refusal of whole-blood transfusions remains unchanged.

Its official statement explained that the position is based on the biblical command to “abstain from blood,” which the organisation continues to regard as a core religious teaching.

This distinction means that the latest announcement concerns the four primary components of blood rather than whole blood itself.

The organisation said the adjustment extends the principle of personal conscience that it has already applied to other medical decisions involving blood and blood-derived products.

Why Jehovah’s Witnesses changed the policy

According to the Governing Body, the decision followed further consideration of what the Bible says about the medical use of blood components.

The organisation said the Bible does not specifically address whether a Christian should accept or reject the four primary blood components in medical treatment.

As a result, it said each member must make an individual decision based on conscience.

The organisation also said it does not believe congregations should become involved in these personal medical decisions or that members should judge one another over the choices they make.

Four blood components now left to personal conscience

The updated policy specifically identifies four major components of blood:

  • Red blood cells
  • White blood cells
  • Plasma
  • Platelets

Jehovah’s Witnesses can now decide individually whether they will accept these components during medical treatment.

The same principle applies to donating blood when the clearly stated purpose is to provide components or blood fractions for another person.

The organisation has also released a chart designed to help members understand products derived from blood and make informed personal decisions.

A major change from the previous position

The announcement represents a notable change from the organisation’s previous position on the four main blood components.

Historically, Jehovah’s Witnesses taught that members should refuse transfusions involving whole blood as well as red cells, white cells, plasma and platelets.

The organisation’s own earlier publications explicitly stated that its position included refusing transfusions of the four main parts of blood.

The latest announcement changes that position by leaving decisions involving those four components to individual conscience.

However, the organisation continues to distinguish these components from whole blood and says its prohibition on whole-blood transfusions remains in place.

Jehovah’s Witnesses say medical care remains important

The organisation also emphasised that Jehovah’s Witnesses accept medical treatment and seek professional healthcare.

It said members want the best available medical care and encouraged them to work with doctors who respect their individual wishes, values and beliefs.

Jehovah’s Witnesses have historically promoted medical approaches that avoid blood transfusions, and the organisation maintains a medical information library for healthcare professionals dealing with Witness patients.

The latest announcement therefore does not represent a rejection of medical treatment.

Instead, it gives individual members greater responsibility for making decisions involving the four main blood components.

Members will make their own decisions

Paul Gillies, an international spokesman for Jehovah’s Witnesses, said the organisation continues to regard life and blood as sacred while recognising that decisions involving blood components are matters of conscience between individual Witnesses and God.

The organisation said congregations will not interfere with those personal decisions and that fellow members should respect one another’s choices.

The policy change is expected to have practical implications for Jehovah’s Witness patients discussing treatment options with doctors and hospitals.

For members facing medical procedures, the decision about whether to accept red cells, white cells, plasma or platelets will now rest with the individual rather than being determined by a blanket organisational prohibition.

The organisation said it will also make an updated medical directive available to members.
