A Florida mother and her 22-year-old son have been arrested on incest charges after deputies investigating a domestic dispute were allegedly told that the pair had been involved in a sexual relationship.
Christina Clemens, 46, of Lakeland, Florida, and her son, Shane Clemens, 22, were arrested after deputies responded to a domestic incident at the family home, according to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.
The investigation reportedly took an unexpected turn after Shane allegedly told deputies that he and his mother had been having a sexual relationship since he was 18.
Sheriff Judd later described the disturbing case in a social media post, saying deputies initially went to the home because Christina had reported that her son had hit her during the dispute.

According to Sheriff Judd, Christina called deputies for assistance after an argument with her son.
The sheriff addressed the alleged violence in his account of the incident, saying: “Shane, you ought not ever lay a hand on your mama.”
Deputies subsequently arrested Shane in connection with the reported domestic incident.
However, the investigation reportedly changed direction after Shane allegedly made a disclosure about his relationship with his mother.
According to Judd, Shane told investigators that he and Christina had been having sex since he was 18 years old.
The allegation prompted detectives to question Christina about the claim.
Mother allegedly admits sexual relationship
Sheriff Judd said deputies asked Christina whether she had been having sex with her son since he turned 18.
According to the sheriff’s account, Christina allegedly responded that it had happened “only about 100 times.”
The statement reportedly led detectives to investigate the allegation further.
The sheriff’s office then spoke with Christina’s husband, who was not identified in the account.
Investigators reportedly asked the husband whether he and Christina were happily married and still living together.
According to Judd, the husband said he had no knowledge of the alleged relationship between his wife and her son.
He reportedly told investigators that he had found it suspicious that Christina and Shane would sometimes go into the master bedroom and lock the door.
The husband’s account was presented by the sheriff as part of the investigation into the allegations.
Both mother and son face incest charges
Following the investigation, Christina Clemens and Shane Clemens were both charged with incest, according to Sheriff Judd.
Christina was also charged with adultery.
The charges followed the alleged statements made during the investigation, although the allegations have not been established as facts through a criminal conviction.
As with any criminal case, the defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
The sheriff characterised the alleged conduct as both disturbing and unlawful, reflecting the nature of the charges brought against the pair.
Sheriff describes unusual investigation
The case attracted attention because deputies initially responded to what appeared to be a domestic violence complaint before allegedly uncovering an entirely different allegation.
Sheriff Judd used the incident to emphasise that investigators can encounter unexpected circumstances while responding to calls for assistance.
The sheriff’s public comments also highlighted the alleged secrecy surrounding the relationship.
According to the account, Christina’s husband was unaware of the alleged sexual relationship between his wife and son, although he reportedly remembered seeing the two enter the master bedroom together and lock the door.
The investigation therefore expanded beyond the original domestic dispute and resulted in the incest allegations being brought against both family members.
What happens next?
The case will now proceed through the legal system, where prosecutors will have to establish the allegations against the defendants according to the applicable standard of proof.
Details about the next court hearing, potential bail conditions and the evidence prosecutors may rely upon were not included in the sheriff’s account provided.
The charges against Christina and Shane Clemens remain allegations at this stage.
The case also demonstrates why statements made during an investigation must be distinguished from facts established in court. While authorities have described what they say happened and charges have been filed, a criminal charge itself is not proof of guilt.
For now, the Florida mother and her son remain at the centre of an unusual criminal investigation that began with a domestic dispute and developed into allegations of an illegal sexual relationship.
Further developments in court could provide more information about the evidence, the defendants’ responses and how the case will proceed.
