A Nigerian family has been left devastated after four-year-old twin boys reportedly died after eating bread that had been placed with rat poison in an attempt to get rid of rodents in their home.

The tragic incident was shared publicly by Nigerian businesswoman Chioma Ifeanyi-Eze, who said the mother of the twins works as a cleaner at her mother’s home.

According to Ifeanyi-Eze’s account, the mother had reportedly placed rat poison on a piece of bread and left it in a hidden area of the house, intending it as bait for rats.

Ifeanyi-Eze said one of the four-year-old twins found the bread and ate some of it before giving it to his brother.

Both children subsequently died, according to the account shared online.

The businesswoman described the incident as a devastating loss for the family, particularly because the woman had five children and lost two of them at the same time.

She expressed sympathy for the mother, describing her as a dedicated worker who had suffered an unimaginable tragedy.

“My mum is so sad,” Ifeanyi-Eze wrote while recounting the incident.

She added that the mother was a dedicated worker and ended her post with an emotional prayer for the grieving family.

A devastating warning for parents

The reported deaths have renewed concerns about the dangers of using household poisons where children may be able to access them.

Rat poison and other pest-control chemicals can be highly dangerous if swallowed, particularly by young children.

Experts generally advise that pesticides and rodenticides should be kept securely out of children’s reach and used strictly according to product instructions.

Leaving poisoned food in areas accessible to children can create a serious risk because young children may not recognise that food has been contaminated.

In homes with young children, parents and caregivers are therefore urged to take extra precautions when dealing with rats, insects and other household pests.

The heartbreaking consequences

The tragedy is particularly painful because the children were twins and were reportedly only four years old.

For their mother, the loss means grieving two children at once.

Ifeanyi-Eze’s account also highlighted the family’s difficult circumstances, noting that the mother had five children before the tragedy.

The death of two siblings in the same incident has prompted emotional reactions from people who encountered the story online.

Many have expressed sympathy for the mother and called for greater awareness about the safe handling and storage of household chemicals.

Rat poison should never be accessible to children

Rodenticides should be treated as dangerous substances and stored securely.

Parents who need to control rats in their homes can consider safer pest-control measures and should ensure that any poisonous substance is completely inaccessible to children.

Food used as bait can be particularly dangerous in a family environment because a child may mistake it for something safe to eat.

If a child is suspected of swallowing rat poison or another potentially toxic substance, medical help should be sought immediately rather than waiting for symptoms to develop.

Parents should also keep the product packaging available because healthcare professionals may need to know exactly what substance was consumed.

A painful reminder about household safety

The reported death of the twins is a heartbreaking reminder that ordinary household pest-control measures can become dangerous when poisonous substances are not securely contained.

While the exact circumstances surrounding the incident have not been independently confirmed by authorities in the sources available for this report, the account has raised an important safety issue for families with young children.

The tragedy also shows how quickly an attempt to solve a common household problem can result in devastating consequences.

For the grieving family, however, the focus is now on coping with the loss of two young children.

As condolences continue to emerge online, the story serves as a painful reminder to parents and caregivers to keep toxic substances, medicines, chemicals and other hazardous materials far away from children.

The family is now facing the heartbreaking reality of losing two four-year-old brothers at the same time.

May the family find strength and comfort as they mourn their devastating loss.
