A major controversy has surrounded Malawi’s return to the Miss World stage after reigning Miss Malawi Thandi Chisi was replaced by first runner-up Ireen Navicha, the daughter of Cabinet Minister Mary Navicha.
Chisi won the Miss Malawi crown in Lilongwe on December 13, 2025, and was widely expected to represent the country at Miss World 2026. Instead, the Miss Malawi Organisation selected Navicha to represent Malawi at the international competition in Vietnam.
The decision triggered criticism and questions about transparency, particularly because of Navicha’s connection to a serving government minister. However, there is no public evidence establishing that her family connections influenced the selection. Organisers have repeatedly denied political interference.
Why was Thandi Chisi dropped?
The controversy initially centred on Chisi’s age.
Miss Malawi officials said the reigning queen was not selected because she was 27 and did not meet the age requirements for Miss World. The explanation quickly came under scrutiny because published Miss World information had indicated an age range that appeared to include contestants aged 27.
Malawi24 reported that Chisi would still be 27 when the Miss World final was held and noted that several other contestants of the same age were participating.
The confusion eventually forced the Miss Malawi Organisation to apologise.
Chief executive Benedette Mweso reportedly accepted “full responsibility” for the confusion surrounding the age eligibility requirements. Later reports said the actual Miss World requirement applicable to the competition capped eligibility at 26, contradicting earlier public explanations that had cited 27.
Organisers give another explanation
As scrutiny intensified, the explanation for Chisi’s exclusion appeared to shift.
Miss Malawi officials later said Navicha was selected partly because she had international pageant experience and stronger preparation for the Miss World competition.
Chief Operations Officer Godfrey Kambewa told Malawi24 that Navicha was the only finalist with previous international pageant experience. He said she had competed at events including Miss Teen Universe and Miss Culture Globe.
The organisation also argued that Miss World places significant emphasis on communication, advocacy and social-impact projects, rather than beauty alone.
Navicha’s previous international experience and community advocacy were therefore presented as reasons for selecting her over the reigning queen.
Why did the minister’s daughter become the focus?
Public interest increased because Navicha is the daughter of Mary Navicha, a serving Malawian Cabinet minister.
The family connection led some social media users to question whether political influence played a role in the decision.
The Miss Malawi Organisation, however, has rejected those suggestions, insisting that the selection was made by its secretariat and board.
Malawi24 also reported that it found no public evidence that Navicha’s family connections influenced the decision.
The controversy therefore remains centred on the fairness and consistency of the selection process rather than any proven political intervention.
Goshen City offers a different perspective
The pageant’s principal sponsor, Goshen City, also entered the controversy and distanced itself from responsibility for the decision.
The organisation said decisions concerning contestants and international representation were made by the Miss Malawi Secretariat and Board.
Goshen City nevertheless offered another explanation for the change, referring to a new approach designed to create international opportunities for finalists rather than limiting such opportunities exclusively to the winner. It also cited Navicha’s international experience.
The sponsor further claimed that Chisi had previously been offered an opportunity to represent Malawi at Miss Universe but declined it for personal reasons.
That claim added another layer to the controversy because earlier explanations from the Miss Malawi Organisation had suggested Chisi was still being considered for Miss Universe.
Thandi Chisi speaks out
Chisi has also addressed the controversy, suggesting that her contractual arrangements with the Miss Malawi Organisation changed after she won the crown.
According to reports, she alleged that changes to her contract removed an earlier guarantee that the Miss Malawi winner would represent the country at an international pageant.
She also claimed she was later asked to help raise money for another international pageant licence, despite previously being told that organisers would cover the relevant costs.
Chisi has maintained a measured public tone despite the controversy.
In an earlier statement, she said that “a crown does not make a Queen; character does,” adding that she believed the relevant facts would eventually emerge.
Ireen Navicha makes history for Malawi
Despite the controversy surrounding her selection, Navicha went on to represent Malawi at Miss World 2026 in Vietnam.
Although she did not win the global title, her participation produced a historic result for Malawi.
Navicha reached the Top 40, giving Malawi its first-ever placement at Miss World. The achievement came as the country returned to the competition after a 14-year absence.
Her run eventually ended at the Top 40 stage, but she described the experience as impactful and celebrated Malawi’s historic placement.
A controversy that goes beyond the crown
The Miss Malawi dispute has raised broader questions about how national beauty pageants select representatives for international competitions.
For many supporters, the central issue is whether the reigning national winner should automatically receive the opportunity to represent her country internationally.
Organisers, meanwhile, have argued that international competitions have different eligibility requirements and that national pageant boards must select contestants they believe are best prepared for specific competitions.
With the various explanations surrounding Chisi’s exclusion — including age, international experience, contractual issues and alternative pageant opportunities — public scrutiny is likely to continue.
For now, Ireen Navicha’s historic Top 40 finish gives Malawi a significant achievement to celebrate, while questions surrounding why reigning Miss Malawi Thandi Chisi was not sent to Miss World remain a contentious chapter in the country’s pageantry history.
