A bill sponsored by the Imo State Senator Ezenwa Onyewuchi to expunge the discrimination against female Police Officers in the Nigerian Police Force got the support of senators yesterday..
The bill was presented at the Senate to end the already existing discrimination against Female officers in the Nigerian Police force.
The provisions of Regulations 122,123,124 and 127 are gender discriminatory with 124 mandating Female Police officers to apply for permission to Marry, while the intending Fiance will be subjected to investigations on criminal records.
The provision also stipulates that a single Female police officer at the time of enlistment into the police force will have spent three years before applying for permission to Marry which is subject to approval
The law makers have pointed out that the content of these police Acts were archaic and were enacted in 1968 when the attitude towards women in the workplace at that time in the country was very discriminatory.
The Senators have all spoken with one voice and asked for its expungement from the Police Act. The senators also intend to extend this to other Para military Agencies in the country as it is obvious that these sort of discriminatory acts also exit in the military and also in the immigration agency.
