At least 72 people have died following last week’s massive migrant surge into Spain’s Ceuta enclave from neighbouring Morocco, according to updated figures released by local authorities.

The tragic death toll marks another grim chapter in one of the largest migrant crossings ever witnessed at the Spanish territory, where an estimated 60,000 people attempted to enter Ceuta in a matter of days, most by swimming around the heavily monitored border separating Morocco from the Spanish enclave.

Officials say the latest figures represent an increase from the previously reported 67 deaths, highlighting the devastating human cost of the migration crisis.

Updated death toll confirmed

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, government delegate to Ceuta, Miguel Ángel Pérez Triano, confirmed the updated casualty figure.

“The latest figure that we have is 72,” he said while responding to questions about the fatalities linked to the unprecedented border crossing.

The updated number has intensified concerns among humanitarian organisations, which continue to warn about the dangers faced by migrants attempting perilous sea crossings in search of better opportunities.

Tens of thousands crossed into Ceuta

The migrant surge saw approximately 60,000 people enter the Spanish enclave, making it the largest recorded mass crossing into Ceuta.

Most of those who entered the territory reportedly returned voluntarily to Morocco within 48 hours after Spanish authorities tightened border controls and increased security operations.

By Sunday, only small groups of migrants remained inside the enclave as security forces continued patrols across the city.

Security strengthened

Spanish police and military personnel remained deployed throughout Ceuta as authorities worked to restore normality.

Security forces patrolled streets across the enclave while rescue teams monitored coastal waters near the border.

Authorities also reinforced the maritime boundary with a new 500-metre floating barrier extending into the Mediterranean Sea to discourage additional crossings.

Civil Guard officers were also seen escorting migrants back to the official border crossing for their return to Morocco.

Humanitarian concerns grow

The deaths have renewed international concern about the humanitarian challenges surrounding irregular migration across the Mediterranean region.

Human rights organisations have repeatedly urged governments to strengthen cooperation on safe migration pathways while protecting vulnerable people fleeing poverty, conflict and instability.

The latest tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers migrants face when attempting risky sea crossings.

Spain blames criminal networks

Spanish authorities have accused organised criminal groups of encouraging the mass movement by spreading false information.

According to officials, rumours circulated claiming that a recent ruling by Spain’s Supreme Court would make it easier for migrants to enter and remain in the country.

Authorities insist those claims were false and believe they contributed significantly to the sudden surge.

Investigations into the activities of the suspected trafficking networks are expected to continue.

International attention

The crisis has also triggered diplomatic tensions within Europe.

Several European partners have criticised Spain’s handling of migration policy, while others have called for stronger cooperation between European Union member states to address irregular migration and improve border management.

Analysts say the incident demonstrates the ongoing pressure facing countries located along key migration routes linking Africa and Europe.

Ceuta remains a migration hotspot

Ceuta, alongside Melilla, remains one of Europe’s most sensitive external borders because both Spanish territories are located on the northern coast of Africa.

Their unique geographic position has made them frequent destinations for migrants seeking entry into Europe.

Authorities continue to balance humanitarian responsibilities with efforts to secure the border and prevent dangerous crossings.

As investigations continue and humanitarian organisations assess the full impact of the tragedy, the loss of 72 lives serves as another stark reminder of the risks faced by thousands of migrants attempting dangerous journeys in search of safety and better opportunities.
