Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has made another bold prediction about the future of artificial intelligence, saying AI and humanoid robots will eventually become so productive that humans could run out of jobs altogether.
Speaking during a conversation with XPRIZE founder Peter Diamandis at the Abundance Summit, Musk envisioned a future where machines produce so many goods and services that governments may simply distribute money to citizens because there will be little traditional work left to do.
His comments have once again sparked global debate over the future of employment, automation and the role artificial intelligence will play in everyday life.

1. Musk believes AI will outperform humans in almost every task
According to Musk, artificial intelligence will eventually reach a point where it performs nearly every productive task more efficiently than humans.
Rather than simply replacing repetitive jobs, he believes AI systems and robots will become capable of delivering almost all services people require.
He said the technology will dramatically increase productivity across virtually every sector of the economy.
2. Robots will produce more than humans can consume
Musk argued that AI-powered robots could eventually manufacture goods and provide services at such extraordinary levels that society would experience an era of abundance.
According to him:
“AI and robots are going to make so much stuff and provide so many services that they will actually run out of things to do for the humans.”
He suggested that machine productivity could eventually exceed human demand.
3. Humans may simply run out of work
Unlike many experts who predict only partial job displacement, Musk suggested that there may eventually be very little economically necessary work remaining for people.
He explained that human demand itself has natural limits.
“There is only so much that humans can even express that they want,” he said.
His comments imply that technological progress could fundamentally transform the relationship between work and income.
4. Universal Basic Income may become Universal High Income
Musk also discussed how governments could respond if automation replaces most forms of employment.
Instead of supporting the traditional concept of Universal Basic Income (UBI), he suggested a more generous system.
“I do think we’ll have universal high income,” he said.
According to Musk, governments may eventually issue money directly to citizens because AI-generated economic output would become so enormous.
5. AI could create abundance instead of scarcity
Musk believes the future economy may become hundreds or even thousands of times larger than today’s economy because of AI-driven productivity.
If machines can continuously create products, build infrastructure and deliver services at minimal cost, many goods could become significantly cheaper and more accessible.
In that scenario, scarcity—which has traditionally shaped economies—could become far less significant.
6. Musk predicts deflation rather than inflation
One of Musk’s more unusual economic predictions involved inflation.
He argued that if the production of goods and services grows much faster than the money supply, prices could actually fall rather than rise.
According to him:
“If the rate of growth of goods and services far exceeds the rate of growth of the money supply, then you will have deflation.”
This contrasts with many concerns that increased government spending would inevitably fuel inflation.
7. The future of work may be completely redefined
Musk’s vision suggests that employment may become optional rather than essential.
If AI systems handle manufacturing, transportation, healthcare, customer service, education and countless other industries, people could spend more time pursuing creativity, research, hobbies or personal interests.
However, many economists caution that such a transition would require significant political, economic and social reforms before becoming reality.
Experts remain divided
Although Musk’s predictions attract widespread attention, many AI researchers and economists believe the transition will be much slower.
Some experts argue that artificial intelligence is more likely to change jobs than eliminate them entirely, creating new professions while automating older ones.
Others warn that governments will need to carefully manage the economic disruption caused by rapid advances in AI technology.
Musk has long warned about AI
Elon Musk has repeatedly described artificial intelligence as both humanity’s greatest opportunity and one of its biggest long-term risks.
Over the years, he has advocated for stronger AI safety regulations while simultaneously investing heavily in AI technologies through Tesla, xAI and other ventures.
His latest comments continue that pattern—highlighting both the enormous economic potential of artificial intelligence and the profound societal changes it could bring.
Whether his predictions ultimately come true or not, the rapid pace of AI development ensures that conversations about the future of work, automation and human purpose will remain at the center of global debate for years to come.
