Morocco has etched their name into the history books after a commanding 3-0 victory over co-hosts Canada in the Round of 16 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, becoming the first African nation to score three goals in a World Cup knockout-stage match.

The Atlas Lions delivered a clinical performance at Houston Stadium on Saturday, overwhelming the hosts with attacking football and disciplined defending to secure a deserved place in the quarter-finals.

A brilliant brace from Azzedine Ounahi and a goal from Soufiane Rahimi sealed Morocco’s biggest-ever victory in the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup and continued their impressive unbeaten run at the tournament.

Morocco looked confident from the opening whistle and wasted little time asserting control over the match.

The North Africans created several early chances before finally breaking the deadlock through midfielder Azzedine Ounahi, whose composed finish gave Canada little chance of recovering.

Canada attempted to respond with spells of possession but struggled to break down Morocco’s organised defensive structure.

Before halftime, Morocco doubled their advantage as Ounahi grabbed his second goal of the match, putting the Atlas Lions firmly in control.

In the second half, Soufiane Rahimi completed the scoring with another well-taken finish, ensuring Morocco comfortably booked their place in the last eight.

The victory was historic for more than one reason.

By scoring three goals against Canada, Morocco became the first African nation ever to score three goals in a FIFA World Cup knockout-stage match.

The achievement represents another major milestone for African football and highlights Morocco’s growing reputation as one of the tournament’s strongest teams.

Their convincing display also reinforces the progress made by African nations on the global football stage.

Quarter-Final Clash Awaits

Following the victory, Morocco will now face France in what promises to be one of the most anticipated quarter-final matches of the tournament.

France progressed after defeating Sweden in the Round of 16 and will provide Morocco with one of their toughest tests so far.

The encounter will also revive memories of previous meetings between the two nations on the international stage.

Morocco will be hoping to continue their remarkable run and become the first African country to reach the World Cup semi-finals since the tournament expanded to 48 teams.

Morocco have enjoyed an outstanding campaign throughout the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The Atlas Lions finished second in their group behind Brazil with seven points, remaining unbeaten during the group phase.

They then overcame the Netherlands in a dramatic Round of 32 encounter, progressing after a tense penalty shootout.

Saturday’s emphatic win over Canada extended their unbeaten record and further established them as genuine contenders for the title.

Azzedine Ounahi was undoubtedly the standout performer against Canada.

The midfielder controlled the tempo of the match while contributing two crucial goals that effectively ended Canada’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals.

His performance earned widespread praise from fans and football analysts, with many describing him as one of Morocco’s most influential players at the tournament.

Rahimi also impressed with his tireless work rate and composed finishing, while Morocco’s defence successfully kept another clean sheet.

For Canada, the defeat brought an end to what had been a memorable World Cup campaign.

As one of the tournament’s co-hosts, they had hoped to delight home supporters by progressing deep into the competition.

However, Morocco’s quality ultimately proved too much, leaving the Canadians unable to find a way back into the contest.

Despite the disappointment, Canada’s performances throughout the tournament have been viewed as another positive step in the country’s football development.

With confidence growing after another dominant display, Morocco will now shift their attention to the quarter-final showdown against France.

Having already defeated top-quality opposition and maintained an unbeaten record, the Atlas Lions have shown they possess both the attacking firepower and defensive discipline needed to compete with the world’s elite.

As African football fans celebrate another historic achievement, Morocco now stands just one victory away from another landmark moment in FIFA World Cup history.
