Veteran Nollywood actor Bob-Manuel Udokwu has sparked fresh conversations on social media after sharing his views on why he believes life is generally easier for women than men, particularly when it comes to financial responsibilities.

The respected actor made the remarks during a recent interview on the Udala podcast, where he discussed the realities of life in Nigeria’s film industry and reflected on the financial struggles many veteran actors face despite decades of success.

Udokwu also revisited the public reaction to the late Nollywood legend John Okafor, popularly known as Mr Ibu, when appeals were made to raise money for his medical treatment before his death.

According to him, many Nigerians fail to understand the enormous financial burden carried by male actors, often assuming that appearing in successful movies automatically translates into lifelong wealth.

“Life Is Generally Easier for Women”

Speaking candidly during the interview, Udokwu argued that men often shoulder heavier financial obligations than women, making it much harder for them to accumulate wealth.

He said:

“Life is generally easier for women than it is for men.”

According to the actor, the issue is not necessarily that Nollywood actors earn too little, but that the demands placed on men consume a significant portion of whatever income they make.

He explained that many male actors are expected to provide for extended family members, pay children’s school fees, settle household expenses, support relatives and meet numerous other obligations that continue throughout their careers.

These responsibilities, he said, often prevent actors from building substantial savings despite years of working in the entertainment industry.

Udokwu said one of the moments that affected him most was the public reaction when veteran actor Mr Ibu appealed for financial assistance during his prolonged illness.

The late comic actor underwent multiple surgeries, including the amputation of one of his legs, before he died in March 2024.

During that period, some Nigerians questioned why someone who had starred in countless films needed public donations for medical treatment.

According to Udokwu, those criticisms ignored the realities of an actor’s financial life.

“It pained me when John Okafor fell ill before he eventually passed away,” he said.

“While we were trying to raise funds for his treatment, some people on social media kept asking, ‘Where is all the money he made from acting?'”

Udokwu stressed that many people wrongly assume actors receive massive salaries that guarantee lifelong financial security.

He noted that while actors do earn money from productions, the income is often irregular and can quickly disappear because of family responsibilities and other financial commitments.

Unlike workers on fixed salaries or individuals with stable businesses, many actors rely on project-based earnings that fluctuate depending on available roles.

Without long-term investments or multiple income streams, sustaining financial stability can become difficult.

The veteran actor also revealed that he was unaware of the size of Mr Ibu’s family until after the fundraising efforts began.

According to him, he later discovered that the late actor had more than one wife, a revelation that helped explain the extent of his financial obligations.

“I didn’t even know he had married more than one wife then,” Udokwu admitted.

His comment highlighted how personal responsibilities can significantly impact an individual’s financial situation, regardless of public perception.

Udokwu’s statement that life is easier for women has generated mixed reactions online.

Some social media users agreed with him, arguing that cultural expectations often place greater financial pressure on men to provide for families and relatives.

Others disagreed, pointing out that women also face numerous challenges, including workplace discrimination, unpaid caregiving responsibilities and gender inequality.

Many observers noted that financial struggles affect both men and women, although the nature of those challenges may differ depending on individual circumstances.

Udokwu’s comments have once again drawn attention to the financial realities facing many veteran entertainers after years in the spotlight.

Despite appearing in hundreds of successful films, some actors continue to struggle with healthcare costs, retirement planning and maintaining stable sources of income.

The discussion has also renewed calls for stronger welfare programmes, pension schemes and healthcare support for practitioners in Nigeria’s entertainment industry.

Several industry stakeholders have previously advocated for improved structures that can protect actors from financial hardship later in life.

While opinions remain divided over Udokwu’s assertion that women generally have an easier life than men, his remarks have succeeded in reigniting important conversations about gender roles, financial responsibility and the often-overlooked realities of working in the entertainment industry.

His reflections on Mr Ibu’s situation also serve as a reminder that public success does not always reflect private financial security.

As debates continue across social media, many Nigerians are using the conversation to examine the pressures placed on both men and women, while also calling for better support systems for veterans who have contributed significantly to the country’s creative industry.
