African football continues to make a powerful statement on the global stage after nine of the ten African representatives booked their places in the Round of 32 of the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The continent has enjoyed one of its strongest World Cup performances in history, with teams from every region of Africa producing impressive displays during the group stage.
The latest nation to secure qualification is Algeria, whose dramatic 3-3 draw against Austria in the early hours of Monday proved enough to send the Desert Foxes into the knockout phase as one of the tournament’s best third-placed teams.
With Algeria’s qualification confirmed, only Tunisia failed to progress from the group stage.

- DR Congo
- South Africa
- Ghana
- Ivory Coast
- Senegal
- Egypt
- Cape Verde
- Morocco
- Algeria
The achievement represents an outstanding campaign for African football, with 90 percent of the continent’s representatives advancing beyond the group stage.
Algeria leaves it late
Algeria’s qualification came under dramatic circumstances.
The North African side entered their final Group J fixture needing a positive result against Austria to keep their hopes alive.
In a thrilling contest filled with attacking football, both teams produced an entertaining six-goal spectacle that ended 3-3.
The single point proved enough for Algeria to finish third in Group J with four points from three matches.
Thanks to the tournament’s expanded format, several of the best third-placed teams also progress to the Round of 32, allowing Algeria to continue their World Cup journey.
Argentina finished top of the group, while Austria claimed second place.
Tunisia suffers early exit
Unlike most of their African counterparts, Tunisia endured a disappointing tournament.
The Carthage Eagles failed to collect a single point during the group stage after suffering defeats in all three matches.
Earlier in the competition, Tunisia lost heavily to Sweden before suffering another defeat against Japan, leaving them rooted to the bottom of Group F.
Their elimination means they are the only African nation not to reach the knockout stage.
Africa’s strongest World Cup showing
The qualification of nine African teams underlines the growing strength of football across the continent.
Over the last decade, African nations have continued to improve their competitiveness at international tournaments through better youth development, increased investment, and the emergence of world-class players competing in Europe’s biggest leagues.
Several African sides entered the 2026 World Cup with experienced squads featuring players from the English Premier League, La Liga, Serie A, Bundesliga and Ligue 1.
That experience has translated into stronger performances against some of the world’s traditional football powers.
Knockout stage awaits
Attention now turns to the Round of 32, where Africa’s representatives will attempt to continue their impressive run.
The expanded World Cup format offers more opportunities for teams to make deep runs into the tournament, and supporters across the continent will be hoping several African nations can progress even further.
Countries such as Morocco, Senegal, Ghana and Ivory Coast have already demonstrated their ability to compete with elite football nations, while Algeria will hope the momentum from their dramatic qualification carries into the knockout rounds.
