A 28-year-old woman, Mrs Charity Anani, who delivered quadruplets at a private hospital Lagos State, has died alongside one of her newborns.

The father of the newborns, Mr Paul, confirmed the development to The Punch, noting that the incident occurred on Friday, April 3, 2026, after Charity suddenly developed a breathing complication on Thursday evening.

The late Charity had earlier said she delivered the four babies on Friday, February 27, 2026, after which they were detained over their failure to balance their medical bill of N3m.

It was learned that she also had a daughter before the birth of the quadruplet, adding that the family initially expected twins as suggested by different ultrasound scans, but it was a surprise when she was eventually delivered of four babies.

While a caesarean section had been carried out on Charity to deliver two out of the babies, one of the newborns developed complications and was placed on oxygen in an incubator.

The situation, however, forced the late Charity and Paul to seek public support to offset their hospital bill.

The bereaved husband said the incident had thrown the family into mourning, noting that after Charity’s health condition worsened, she was placed on oxygen and medication.

He disclosed that although the total hospital bill was about N3m, a part payment had been made, leaving an outstanding balance of N1.4m yet to be settled.

Paul said, “It happened on Friday, April 3, 2026. She was complaining that she was not breathing.

“Her breathing was not fine, so I needed to call the doctor to check on her. After the doctor examined her, she was given oxygen and medication.

“The breathing complications started on Thursday between 5 pm and 6 pm till around 9 am on Friday, when she eventually passed. We are still in the hospital, Adebayo Hospital at Governor’s Road in Igando, Lagos State, where the incident happened.”

Paul added that before Charity’s death, one of the quadruplets earlier placed in an incubator had also died.

“One of the four babies also died, and that was the one in the incubator. At the time the baby died, my wife was still alive, but she was asking about the baby, but because of her condition, I decided not to tell her the truth about what happened.

“I had to keep it to myself, thinking that when we got home, I’d know how to tell her. I didn’t know that this was what would happen at the end of the day. We have been discharged from the hospital,” he stated.

Why This Tragedy Matters

Beyond the emotional weight, this incident highlights serious concerns about healthcare accessibility and affordability in Nigeria.

Many families face similar struggles, where life-saving treatment comes with overwhelming financial pressure.

This case serves as a wake-up call for reforms that prioritize patient care over financial constraints.

What Happens Next?

While the family continues to mourn, attention is now turning to possible investigations and calls for accountability.

Many Nigerians are demanding changes to ensure that no patient is subjected to such circumstances again.

Conclusion

The story of how a quadruplets mum dies in Lagos hospital is one that has touched many hearts.

It is a painful reminder of how fragile life can be—and how critical it is to build a healthcare system that protects and supports every citizen, regardless of their financial situation.
