The Aliko Dangote Foundation has initiated the distribution of 10 kg bags of rice to 10,000 vulnerable individuals in Anambra State as part of its nationwide food intervention program.
This effort is part of a larger initiative where the foundation is distributing one million 10 kg bags of rice across Nigeria’s 36 states. The distribution is being carried out in partnership with reputable non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in each state to ensure transparency and accountability.
In Anambra State, the distribution is being managed by Justice Development and Peace Caritas (JDPC), an NGO established by the Awka Catholic Diocese.
Reverend Father Levi Uko, the Executive Director of JDPC, Awka Diocese, explained the selection process: “The Aliko Dangote Foundation chose JDPC for the distribution after a thorough screening exercise. We are responsible for distributing 10,000 bags of 10 kg rice across all 21 local government areas of Anambra State.”
Father Uko detailed the distribution strategy, highlighting the involvement of local town union presidents to ensure the rice reaches the intended recipients.
“Each community will receive fifty bags of 10 kg rice. To ensure the rice gets to the right people, we require that recipients take photographs and videos during the handover, which are then posted on our platform for verification,” he added.
The foundation has also provided funds to community leaders to facilitate the transportation of rice to various communities.
Community leaders expressed their gratitude for the support. Mr. Johnpaul Ezenwaka, President General of Aguluezechukwu Community, and Mr. Innocent Obiefuna, a representative of Uga Community, both praised Aliko Dangote for his generosity, especially during these challenging economic times. They conveyed their appreciation and prayed for continued blessings on the benefactor.
The distribution of one million bags of rice to vulnerable households across Nigeria is expected to significantly alleviate the hardships faced by these communities. The initiative comes at a critical time, as recent government reforms have had a profound impact on vulnerable populations, exacerbating issues of poverty and food insecurity.
